STS Crane Electrical Maintenance Training

Practical, system-specific training for electrical and maintenance teams responsible for Siemens-based ship-to-shore crane installations. Drawn from direct field experience across commissioning, retrofit and breakdown response,

Our courses focus on the faults, failure modes and diagnostic workflows your technicians encounter across the crane lifecycle.

Training built on real-world experience

Every module is grounded in live crane environments, not generic classroom theory. Content is built around your crane’s actual architecture, including PLC program structure, drive configuration, network topology and CMS, so technicians able to diagnose and restore their own equipment faster and with greater confidence.

Beyond STS Cranes

The same practical, system-specific training is available for electrical and maintenance teams working with Siemens automation and drive systems in other industries, including material handling, process and manufacturing plants. Drawing on direct field experience across commissioning, retrofits and breakdown response, courses cover SIMATIC S7 and safety PLCs, SINAMICS and MASTERDRIVES drives, SIMOTION motion control, and PROFIBUS and PROFINET networks, tailored to your equipment and your team’s experience level.

Training

Control systems architecture

Overview of the STS crane electrical and control architecture: hoist, trolley, gantry and boom motion systems, spreader and headblock interfaces, operator cabin controls, and how the PLC, drive and CMS layers interact. Includes reading and navigating electrical schematics

PLC Systems

Siemens S7 hardware configuration, program structure and I/O diagnostics. Navigating the PLC program to trace interlocks, permissives and motion inhibits back to their source.

Safety PLCs and Distributed Safety

Siemens fail-safe controller architecture, including F-CPUs, F-I/O modules and PROFIsafe communication. Working with S7 Distributed Safety: the structure of safety programs, F-blocks, interpreting safety-related diagnostics. Covers crane safety functions such as stop categories, overspeed and overload protection, and limit and anti-collision systems, managing changes to safety programs without compromising integrity.

Drives and motion control

SINAMICS / MASTERDRIVE drive line-up configuration, parameter structure, fault and alarm interpretation. SIMOTION motion control fundamentals covering axis configuration, positioning and the interaction between motion control and drive objects.

Industrial fieldbus networks

PROFIBUS DP network topology, addressing and termination, and diagnosing communication faults, intermittent node dropouts and cabling issues using standard diagnostic tools and system buffers.

Troubleshooting with CMS

Using CMS fault logs, event histories and live status screens to isolate faults. Correlate alarms across subsystems and alarm message trigger in PLC

Troubleshooting with Step7

Step7 online functions, interpreting the diagnostic buffer, monitoring and forcing variables safely, cross-referencing logic, and tracing interlocks to identify why a function is inhibited.

Troubleshooting with Simotion Scout

Connecting to SIMOTION and SINAMICS devices, reading drive and axis alarms, using trace functions to capture motion and drive behaviour, and backing up and restoring project and parameter data.
